This spring, the hottest topic in the commercial vehicle market is undoubtedly pickup trucks. The latest data shows that domestic pickup truck sales exceeded 43,000 units in February, soaring 29.7% year-on-year and surging 18.2% month-on-month, hitting a new high for the same period in nearly five years. Even more remarkable, cumulative sales for January-February climbed to 80,000 units, up 4.1% year-on-year. So, this wave of "pickup fever" has arrived fast and fierce—what exactly is the secret behind it? Let's dig in!

Looking at the rankings, the most formidable player is undoubtedly Great Wall Pickup, with monthly sales of 17,000 units, pushing its market share directly to 40.15%—more than the combined total of the second through fifth place. Even more exaggerated, this pickup "big brother" posted cumulative sales of nearly 30,000 units in January-February, up 14.1% year-on-year, dominating both domestic and overseas markets. This "screen-hogging" posture is like treating the pickup market as its own backyard.

The "Big Three" of Maxus, JAC, and JMC each have their own strengths, ranking second, third, and fifth respectively. JAC Pickup has been quietly making a fortune, with February sales growth exceeding 10%, and its value-focused T8 PRO series quietly gaining traction in third- and fourth-tier cities. JMC Pickup holds steady in fifth place, with the all-new Baodian pure electric version already on the way, pursuing a two-pronged strategy of fuel pickups plus new energy.

BAIC Foton and Zhengzhou Nissan also performed well. BAIC Foton posted February growth of over 40% to rank sixth, while Zhengzhou Nissan grew nearly 30% to rank seventh, with its all-new high-end pickup Z9 building anticipation before even hitting the market.

But the most explosive segment has to be new energy pickups. February sales skyrocketed 299% year-on-year and grew 25% month-on-month—this growth rate is simply "off the charts." Radar New Energy Vehicles topped the new energy pickup segment with a 227.5% increase, and owners who've gotten a taste are already exclaiming: "Electric is sweeter than fuel!"

Facing this new energy offensive, traditional giants naturally won't sit idly by. Great Wall's upcoming Shanhai Cannon Hi4-T hybrid pickup and JMC's all-new Baodian pure electric version are already on the way. What's more, there are reports that new energy pickups could break into the 150,000 yuan range. If that comes true, fuel pickups may truly face "the sky falling."

Of course, although the new energy offensive is fierce, for now, fuel pickups still account for the bulk. Demand in traditional stronghold provinces like Sichuan, Yunnan, and Xinjiang remains solid—especially Sichuan, which has surged to become the number one province by sales. Local industry insiders say that pickup buyers are no longer just contractors; more and more young people are buying them to modify for off-road fun. From this perspective, "encircling the countryside from the cities" is a viable path.
Editor's Note
One flower blooming alone is not spring; a hundred flowers blooming together fills the garden with spring. The pickup market's recovery momentum is encouraging, but there's one important piece of information that cannot be ignored: the head effect is intensifying the Matthew effect. Traditional giants dominate the rankings, and tail-end automakers can't even get a sip of the soup. So how should this dilemma in the pickup market be broken? Commercial Vehicle Commune believes it's actually not that hard. As netizens say: "In the past, driving a pickup was for making a living; now, driving a pickup is for looking cool." This, perhaps, is the key to turning things around. So, how do you all think pickups will develop in the future? Drop your predictions in the comments!
